Flooring not completed, yet money was given.

We work hard for our money, therefore looking for deals to save money and stretch our paycheck has become an art form. The most common way is cutting coupons, but how about searching Craig's list where we find anything from clothing to cars?  We all want a deal! and searching for special pricing for our home improvements projects is no exception.

Often we are asked about money saving ideas for new cabinets, counter tops and flooring. Counter tops, cabinets and flooring come in several price ranges to choose from.  The cost for labor is usually standard, unless you look on sites such as Craig's list for a deal.  I understand why looking for a person who can put in flooring or painting the home for less money is appealing.  More often than not in the end, the deal we received could cost more money for the homeowner.

In an article written by LiAna Gonzales with 3TV  An Arizona resident wanted new flooring in her condo, she looked on Craig's list, as we do when looking for a deal, only to end up with an unfinished floor. .http://www.azfamily.com/news/consumer/3OYS-Confronts-Craigslist-Contractor-185603631.html

When it comes to labor intensified items such as a new roof, adding/removing a wall, painting or new flooring it's best kept for the licensed Contractors.  License Contractors are required to provide insurance to cover any unforeseen circumstances.  In the case of the Arizona  resident a deposit was given, some work was completed however the homeowner felt she exhausted all her options to get the job completed and  looked to 3TV for assistance.  There are actions you can take to ensure this does not happen with your  project.

Please do some research on the person and or company.  They must be licensed to perform work in your home. Why? you ask. Here is a list of items I have heard about this past year.

1. The person I hired to replace my baseboards took my deposit and I have not heard from him in 3 months.

2. Once the painter was gone we noticed all the windows have over spray.  They need to be replaced however the person I hired will not replace them.

3. The flooring that was installed is not what I wanted, the installer will not fix the error.

4. When the installer we hired to replace the flooring in our bathroom broke the toilet they would not replace it.

Research any company you are looking at hiring. They are in your home, be sure they do not have disciplines.   Looking to the Registrar of Contractors  for any complaints or disciplines.  Type in the name of the company as well as the owners name.

The Better Business Bureau will offer the rating and any disciplines the company would have.

And of course, Google the company name and the owner.

A licensed handy man will be great for some projects and can even save money.  When it comes to larger projects especially ones that could require permits I recommend hiring a licensed general contractor. Remember if you are having someone in your home research them to ensure your home is kept safe.

Happy New Year!                     Enjoy Your Family!                                  Enjoy Your Home!
